Stop Motion Video Technique

Stop Motion, whose first use dates back to the first decades of cinema, is an animation technique which is still widely used despite the developments in computer technology. This technique is used to make objects seem like moving on their own in the movies. At the beginning, stop motion technique was utilized in short animation movies but in the following years it gave life to the main character of King Kong owing to Willis O’Brien. Today, it is still used by not only professional but also amateur movie producers.

Stop Motion technique is based on showing the sequential photograph frames of an object taken one by one in every small movement. A single photograph frame doesn’t mean anything on its own but you can see the animation when you play a set of photograph frames in a continuous sequence.

If you are curious about this technique, you can create your own stop motion videos by using Stop Motion. You just need the following equipments; a digital camera with enough memory, a computer, animation software, small toys and a scenario for your movie.

First, you have to set the scene by decorating and place the toys that you will animate. Your camera should be fixed so that it can videotape the whole movements at the same angle. Be careful about the light since even a small change in illumination will spoil the effectiveness of your animated movie. After all, you can take the photographs. You have to be sure that you do small changes on the toys between two photo shoots so that your movie can be persuasive. Finally, you have to put together all the photographs you have taken in an order with the help of animation software. After saving these files as a video, you can enjoy watching your first animated movie.

Recently wrote a few hubs about this very subject, regarding the 1960s children's series Trumpton, Camberwick green and Chigley... I can remember the animated figures to this day, much better than some of the terrible cartoons that we see today.
